Holidays

Anonymous 6th grade student

The holidays are a great time to spend with family and friends. There are countless holidays around the world that are celebrated for a variety of reasons, and many of them include family gatherings. This is my favorite part of the holidays, because it brings people closer together. This time of year also provides short holiday breaks from work and school, which allows people to mentally and physically relax. Presents, candy, music, games, and activities keep it fun and thrilling for kids as well as adults. Festivities such as Easter, the Day of the Dead, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are examples of what I think of as family holidays.

Finally, Easter is here! Easter is the time of year for painting eggs and munching on candy. It’s also time for the Easter Bunny. All people who celebrate Easter know the Easter Bunny because he brings joy and happiness to all. While coloring and painting the eggs, the children make wacky and colorful designs. Reluctantly putting on nice but uncomfortable clothes, the children get embarrassed when their parents take photos. The church usually has an Easter Egg hunt that you can participate in. You can search for the plastic golden egg and you get a free basket full of stuff if you find it. Sadly though, holidays don’t last forever.

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, originated in Mexico but is celebrated by many of Mexican descent around the world. It is a way to celebrate the lives of family members and friends who have died. People play music for their loved ones, fix favorite foods and put flowers and candles on graves in the hope that it will bring a visit from the departed. People wear masks, face paint and unique, decorative clothes. Interestingly, Dia de los Muertos lasts for two days instead of one day like other holidays, starting on November 1, and ending on November 2. This holiday is a reminder to enjoy your time with family while it lasts.

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and activities. This holiday allows family and friends to get together and have a good time. Usually, kids get to do all kinds of activities, like making autumn leaves and turkeys out of paper. People work hard to make food like turkey, ham, and mash potatoes. There are a plethora of desserts that are delicious. Interestingly, families around the United States have their own unique traditions for Thanksgiving. At the end of the day, it's all about the bonding time with family and friends.

Finally, Christmas is here. I've been waiting since the day after Thanksgiving. One of the best things about Christmas is that it is a nice break from school and work. Going to Christmas parties in an ugly sweater is a fun time for all who attend. Everyone has their own preferences for Christmas dinner. There are people who eat ham, and those who eat chicken. It truly is the happiest time of the year. Unfortunately, this holiday takes place at the end of the year, which means it will be a whole year until we can do it again.

Most holidays offer a great reason to celebrate because they are all unique and fun in their own way. For example, on Christmas you may get presents, and on Easter you might get to color eggs in wacky designs. “Are you sad when the holidays are over?“ I asked Mom. “Sometimes. Spending time with family is great, but peace and quiet is nice, too,” my mom said. Thankfully, a new round of holidays will be coming soon.
